DEMONSTRATION AGAINSTNEW REMOVAL CENTRE AT HASSOCKFIE IN DURHAM ON 14 MAY

As previously reported the Government has opened a new Immigration Removal Centre for women at Hassockfield in County Durham. The site was officially opened at the end of last year, with the first women transferred on the 28 of December… an incredibly cruel period between Christmas and New Year. The No to Hassockfield Campaign, along with other groups, has been hosting monthly demonstrations at the site itself on the third Saturday of Every Month. Prayer vigils, organised by multiple faith groups, also take place monthly.
The Group is holding a National Demonstration in on the (flyer attached in this email). Durham city centre was chosen because Durham is a city of Sanctuary and is only 25 minutes away from the site. Also it is hoped that the good transports links (unlike at Hassockfield) will mean that more people can attend. There are some incredible speakers lined up for this event including women who have been detained, asylum seekers, human rights lawyers and the local MP, plus musicians and performers. Please attend if you can. The Campaign are encouraging those who are able to to wear orange (this is the colour of solidarity and compassion for those forcibly displaced) as well as bring signs of love and support, to show the government what we think of their asylum and immigration policies.
