New Refugee Council analysis shows most people arriving by small boats across the Channel are likely be fleeing persecution

Recently, the Home Secretary, Priti Patel made the following statement:

But the Refugee Council released a new Report yesterday, using Freedom of Information data and the Government’s own statistics to show that this statement is false. Our research finds that, of the top ten nationalities of people crossing the Channel, 61% of people arriving by boat are likely to be granted protection by the Home Office. These are people fleeing for their lives, desperately seeking safety.
The Home Office have stated that 98% of people who cross the Channel claim asylum and our research looks at the likely outcomes of these claims.
