Appalled at the tragedies in the Mediterranean that are happening, Liberal Democrats for Seekers of Sanctuary have written to the Prime Minister endorsing the letter sent by 19 aid, refugee and human rights charities urging more to be done to help people to reach Europe in safety.
We have put it to him that the loss of a life at sea is as tragic if it is a European on holiday as a migrant fleeing to safety. It should not have taken a tragedy such has what has happened this weekend to trigger action, but now that it has we urged him to enter fully into supporting the EU Joint Foreign and Home Affairs Council Ten Point Plan about to be put to the European Council on Thursday.
Whilst the safety of migrants at the moment has to be of the highest priority, the causes of their having to flee, the dangerous profiteering, and the treatment of migrants who arrive in Europe all must be tackled urgently.

Sadly these points were not taken up at the time. Whilst we appreciate of course that Parliament is dissolved, we are calling for the UK Government to take urgent and necessary action immediately.
