REMEMBERING SHIRLEY WILLIAMS AND CARRYING ON HER WORK

LD4SOS were very sorry to hear of the death at 90yrs of Baroness Shirley Williams, an inspiration to us all. From Labour MP to founder of the SDP and finally Liberal Democrat Parliamentarian in both Houses, she was a very bright star in the political realm.
Shirley was a passionate campaigner for a more humane asylum system. She consistently opposed indefinite detention and was adamant that time limited immigration detention should only be used as an absolute last resort.
At a meeting arranged by Baroness Sally Hamwee in 2014 on “The detention of un-returnable migrants” Shirley Williams challenged everyone there to get our views known in every piece of media we could about the issue of detention and other issues around asylum and refugees.
LD4SOS will carry on trying to do just that. We face a huge challenge in opposing the Government’s New Plan for Immigration and you will be hearing more from us about our response and how you can help. In the meantime you can see the Plan, published on 24th March 2021 here. The consultation (45 questions in the Stakeholder Questionnaire closes on 6th May 2021.
