UK hotel bill for 37,000 migrants actually £4.7m a day, Home Office says – BBC News
But we say:
This headline not only highlights confusion in the Home Office as to what they are doing, but gives the impression that asylum seekers are costing the earth being housed in hotels.
The truth is that the hotels are not at all fit for purpose and asylum seekers are desperate to be out of them and living in the community to be able to cook their own food, and make links in the local area.
But there aren’t enough homes in the community. The answer is not to stop people seeking sanctuary from coming to the UK but to free up and create housing.
With a much better decision making process as Lib Dems advocate here people would not be waiting for years for a just and fair decision, and taking up existing asylum housing.
An injection of money for local authorities to be able to oversee properly owned by private landlords being upgraded and fit for purpose would provide more decent standard homes for not just asylum seekers, but others too. It would create local jobs, and indeed be part of “levelling up” many areas in need of such.
