We must work with our neighbours to tackle the refugee crisis

Liberal Democrats welcome the meeting of European ministers to find proper solutions to the biggest humanitarian crisis facing Europe. It is only by working together with our European partners that we can tackle this enormous challenge. Any solution must be a coordinated response which looks at every aspect including finding a durable political solution in Syria. Leader of the Liberal Democrats Tim Farron said: “Europe is on course to receive millions more refugees this year and the best chance we have to tackle this crisis, both at the source and here on our shores, is by working together with our European partners. “Reception centres must be properly resourced, the relocation scheme needs to be scaled up, those countries on the frontline must be fully supported, and in particular vulnerable unaccompanied children must be identified and protected. “We must assert pressure on Turkey to properly police its borders, while supporting them to deal with the millions of refugees they are currently hosting and provide safe and legal routes for those desperate people to seek sanctuary here in Europe. And of course, we must put our full diplomatic weight into finding a durable political solution in Syria. “Far-right parties across the continent are using this crisis to fuel their own nationalist agendas, and it is critical that the Europe acts quickly and decisively to prevent the closing of borders and stop the escalation of attacks on refugees. “Theresa May has declared her support for Britain to stay in the EU, so here’s her chance to show how Britain can play a leading role in overcoming Europe’s biggest challenge of the century.”
