Reaction to Cameron’s announcement on unaccompanied children

We are proud of Tim Farron who has said of the Government announcement yesterday to take in some unaccompanied children from Syrian camps but not Europe:

“This announcement alone won’t change lives, but the actions that follow it can. This is an important step, but it is far from the guarantee these desperate children need, and action must follow immediately. Thousands of children are travelling across Europe. They are cold, alone and scared. They deserve a safe, welcoming home and I won’t stop until that’s what we’ve given them.”

He added, “As a country we must pull together and offer them a home, while encouraging our European neighbours to do the same. I want to pay tribute to Save the Children and have been proud that the Liberal Democrats were the first party to back their campaign, and will continue to work with them to make sure this announcement becomes a reality. The images of the children I met in Calais and Lesbos will stay with me forever. This funding is welcome news, but there is still more to be done.

He ended his statement saying “I will not let up in my fight to ensure this Government takes a lead as the compassionate, welcoming and caring country we all know it is.” Liberal Democrats for Seekers of Sanctuary and others in our Party will not let up in the fight for more children to be taken in from the cold, and given a proper home, as we would want for any children that we know.

It doesn’t end there. Those children who have no contacts or home in the country they originally came from must not be automatically removed when they become 18 either.
